Ongiin Khiid, Mongolia

Ongiin Monastery was once a sprawling Buddhist complex home to over 1,000 monks. In 1939 the monastery was completely destroyed by Communists, the monks massacred or forced to join the army or become peasants. The site remains in ruins today.
